We all know that a fizz-filled drink makes us burp like crazy because it is loaded with carbon dioxide. When it enters our stomach, it adds up to the already existing gas and that's why we burp. This is still in our hands, because no aerated beverages mean no burps. But why do we burp otherwise? If you've been wondering that too, then read this.

Our stomach has a lot of digestive acids and it releases gases during the process of digestion. And there are only two ways to get rid of it: farting or burping.

So burping is actually healthy, because if this extra gas is not released from your gut then it can lead to bloating and severe abdominal pain. You must have noticed that when you have acidity, then a burp or a fart brings a lot of relief.

But frequent burps are a sign that something might be wrong, and these five possible reasons could be why:

1. You might have swallowed too much air
Now, you must be thinking how you can swallow air. Well, chewing gum,
eating too fast, drinking with a straw, and talking while eating are all ways in which we swallow air.

This extra air gets trapped in our stomach and makes us burp more than usual. This is one of the most common reasons for excessive burping. Do you know you tend to swallow more air when you are nervous? This situation is called aerophagia.

2. You've eaten something which is making you gassy
"Eating starchy food like rice can also make you gassy. Also, different people have different gastrointestinal (GI) systems. Due to which every person digests the food at a different pace. If your GI is slow then you might burp a lot and vice-versa," says Dr Manjeetha Nath Das, internal medicine, Columbia Asia Hospital, Gurugram.

She continues: "You should include more salad in your meal as it takes less time to digest. Plus, avoid too much gap in between the meals. Small and frequent meals will help you control excessive burping."

3. You might have irritable bowel syndrome
According to Dr Das, irritable bowel syndrome patients always complain about diarrhea, constipation, or other GI issues. Especially, in case of constipation there is a gas build up which leads to excessive burping. At times this gas also leads to severe pain in the abdominal region.

4. Diabetes could be another reason
Diabetics face a complication known as gastroparesis. This situation affects the muscles of the stomach due to which digestion gets hampered, as it damages the muscles that control the entire process. Therefore, along with other symptoms like nausea and vomiting, excessive burping can also be seen.

5. You might have celiac disease
Celiac disease is seen in people who are allergic to gluten-rich food like bread, barley, etc. It is a major digestive issue which can lead to inflammation and can damage the small intestinal lining. This can make the digestion slower and troublesome leading to problems like bloating, abdomen pain, cramping, excessive burping and farting, etc.

"Sedentary lifestyle is also another reason why you might be burping a lot. And if after having a meal you lie down immediately, then your burps will be unstoppable. This is mostly seen in youngsters and elderly as there is hardly any movement. So, a 30-minute walk or a stroll is what I recommend after a meal for better digestion and to control unhealthy burping," she concluded.
